Tragically timed news today. RIP David Bowie.
This morning, I was woken up by my girlfriend in the middle of the night and she sounded sad when she told me, 'David Bowie died.' I fell back asleep and upon waking up to get ready for the day, I wasn't sure if I was still in a dream when I heard the news. Unfortunately, I was not dreaming at either times when finding this out.
Growing up, I was exposed to David Bowie, and certainly enjoyed him. However, it wasn't until meeting Trent Reznor and hearing him talk about what an influence Bowie was on him, that I dove deep into the Bowie catalog and became the fan of his that I am today. It's been heartwarming to read everything that folks are saying about him today. Clearly, a great man will be missed.
This morning, local Seattle radio station KEXP started another tribute day to Bowie (they had one on Friday too in celebration of the release of Blackstar). I requested the live version of 'Hurt' featuring Trent and Bowie and 'I'm Afraid of Americans', assuming they would only play one - however (and this is a testament to how amazing this station is), they played both back to back. What a way to start such a sad day.
Today, a quote from Simon Pegg certainly puts it all into perspective: "If you're sad today, just remember the world is over four billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie."
Cheers spaceman,
Alex
